Attention all Wasteland wanderers and post-apocalyptic cinephiles, it’s time for another hot take from your favorite snarky sci-fi blogger! Today we’re talking about the highly anticipated release of Furiosa, the latest addition to the Mad Max saga from filmmaker George Miller. And boy, does he love to remind us of his classic cinema influences, specifically Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Because nothing says “desolate wasteland” like slapstick physical comedy.
But Miller’s not just bringing back the silent film era, he’s also giving us some fresh faces in the form of Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. Because when I think of the end of the world, I definitely think of these two actors. And let’s be real, we’ve never seen them in roles like these before. Who knew they had the range to play diametrically opposed nemeses in a desert ruin setting? Oh wait, that’s right, nobody.
But according to Miller, Taylor-Joy’s “timeless” quality and dancing abilities make her the perfect fit for Furiosa. Because when I think of surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, I definitely think of singing and dancing. And let’s not forget Hemsworth’s unrecognizable turn as Dr. Dementus, the veritable Prof. Harold Hill of the Wasteland. Because nothing says “charismatic and bombastic” like a man wearing prosthetics in the desert.
But don’t worry, Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth see a “strange symbiosis” in their characters’ dynamic. Because nothing says “survival” like teaming up with your mortal enemy. According to Taylor-Joy, disappearing and coming back is her character’s survival tactic. And for Hemsworth, it’s all about being charismatic and entertaining. Because when you’re facing extreme adversity and a lack of resources, being a circus sideshow is definitely the way to go.
And let’s not forget about the “evil things” Dementus does in the name of survival. Because in his mind, it’s totally justified to do whatever it takes to survive, even if it means killing innocent people. But hey, at least Hemsworth found a way to justify his character’s actions. I’m sure that makes it easier to sleep at night.
Meanwhile, Taylor-Joy is still recovering from playing a character who left her feeling dirty and desperate for a rinse. But hey, at least she defended her character to the end. Because that’s what we all do when we play terrible people, right? We defend them to the death and then immediately wash our hands of them once the cameras stop rolling. Classic method acting.
So mark your calendars, folks, Furiosa will be gracing our screens on May 24th. And if you’re still in the mood for some post-apocalyptic despair, might I suggest giving Thoroughbreds a watch? Because apparently Taylor-Joy’s character in that film is even worse than the one she plays in Furiosa. Can’t wait to see how she defends that one. Until next time, stay tuned for more scathing commentary on the latest sci-fi flicks. You’re welcome.
