What do you get when you mix a time-traveling alien, a world without music, and a bootleg version of The Beatles? Apparently, the second episode of the newly relaunched Doctor Who. And while it may sound like a recipe for success, unfortunately, “The Devil’s Chord” falls flat in more ways than one.
Sure, the premise of a world without music is intriguing, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The episode’s portrayal of The Beatles as boring, uninspired session musicians is not only a disservice to the band’s legacy but also completely disregards the passion and drive that led them to become one of the most iconic bands in history.
And let’s not forget the elephant in the room – the actors playing The Beatles don’t exactly resemble the Fab Four. But hey, who needs accuracy when you have a timey-wimey plot about the death of music, right?
Overall, “The Devil’s Chord” may have good intentions, but it ultimately misses the mark. Maybe next time, the Doctor should stick to saving the universe instead of trying to rewrite music history. Just a suggestion.
But hey, if you’re into watching a depressing and dystopian version of The Beatles, then this episode is for you. Just don’t expect any catchy tunes or energetic performances. After all, without music, what’s the point? Doctor Who is airing this monstrosity on the BBC in the UK and on Disney+ in the US. Tune in if you dare.
