It being Sunday, let’s do some sunshine and sarcasm with a scifi review of ‘Sunny.’ TL;DR – it has all the scifi charm of a OmegaXL infomercial. Sunny tries to pass off surface-level exploration of technology as a deep and thought-provoking narrative. Sure, the homebot may be a fancy piece of machinery that can make coffee and fold laundry, but one thing you should know is that there are already real-life robots that can do those tasks. An interesting thing about this is that while Sunny tries to portray the homebot as something revolutionary, it’s actually just a slightly more advanced version of what already exists.
Hate to say it, but I was right. Sunny is a handful of mediocre shows and recycled plotline. Good for Apple TV+. I was hoping I was wrong, but I wasn’t.
But what really grinds my gears is how Sunny doesn’t even attempt to delve into the ethical implications of this technology. We’re just supposed to accept that robots are now a normal part of society, without any critical examination of the consequences. The show seems content with dumbing down complex issues to make everyone happy, instead of challenging viewers to think deeper.
And don’t even get me started on the lack of diversity in the characters. In a futuristic world where technology reigns supreme, you would think there would be more representation of different cultures and backgrounds. But nope, we’re stuck with the same cookie-cutter, predominantly white and straight characters we’ve seen a million times before.
Look, I get it. Sometimes we just want mindless entertainment that looks pretty. But when it comes to science and technology, we deserve better. Good enough isn’t good enough. We should be pushing for stories that not only entertain, but also challenge and educate us. So Apple TV+, if you want to keep up with the big leagues, quit dumbing things down and start delivering content that truly explores the complexities of our relationship with technology.
