‘Upgrade’ is cyberpunk??

Ugh, another article about some obscure sci-fi film from 2018? Can’t we just stick to the classics like Star Wars and Star Trek? I mean, who has time for these lesser-known, low-budget films?

Oh wait, it’s making a comeback on Netflix? Well, I guess that’s one way to get people to watch it. Maybe they’ll add some flashy special effects and a big-name actor to distract from the lackluster plot.

Here’s my beef: we all know how this is going to go. “Things seem happy until a seemingly random incident crashes their car outside of town, where a group of assassins is waiting. Now paralyzed, Grey receives an offer from his reclusive tech billionaire friend to implant a very illegal “Stem” chip that will allow him to walk again. The problem is that the chip has an artificial intelligence (an actual one, not an algorithm that steals other people’s work) with a mind of its own, and it happens to be very prone to violence.”

Yawn. Talk about originality. What makes this ‘cyberpunk?” Is it the leather jackets, neon lights, and ridiculous haircuts? Can we please come up with something new? But hey, at least we’ll get to see some cool technology, right? Like neo-biotech and robots that do our bidding. Oh wait, that’s just in the movie. In reality, we’re still stuck here with our non-flying cars and Siri that can’t even understand our commands.

And let’s not forget that Upgrade ”opens the door to a vast world ripe for follow-ups,’ because every sci-fi movie needs an option to become a franchise to be worth investing in, right?

In conclusion, while I appreciate the effort to bring back this forgotten film, let’s not pretend it’s the next big thing in the sci-fi world. I’ll stick to my tried and true favorites, thank you very much.

Everything you just said is wrong.
